Design Considerations & Decisions
Designed by a group of students, the premise of the project was to create a model potential product, and with that came assembly, fastener, and manufacturing considerations.
All fasteners were chosen based on expected loading with an additional safety factor of 2; the exception to this is where compliant mechanisms are used. Those were chosen for parts frequently used by customers, which would be more likely to break than other hardware, such as pumps or compressors, and thus should be easy to repair as well. The majority of these compliant joints are snap fits
Faster location was dictated not only through loading but also through assembly concerns, as each sub-assembly could be dropped onto either the frame or bolted to a previous sub-assembly. This means that each could theoretically be manufactured in parallel with a short line for final assembly, as only a handful of bolts would need to be secured between the chassis and the upper portion.
